I compose, record, and produce soundtracks for games across many genres.
My work varies greatly in style and tone. Rock, country, hip-hop, breakcore, ambient,
chiptune, ska, and punk represent some of the genres I typically work in.
I can play piano and guitar to a sufficient level to compose for them and am
skilled at producing effective arrangements for communicating necessary moods and emotions.
I am also familiar with audio pipelines and workflows in Unity and Unreal 5, including
Unreal 5 metasounds.
I prefer working with free (libre) software such as Ardour, Hydrogen, Surge XT, and
others. I have no problem using software such as Logic Pro X and other more common
industry tools if required by a project.
I am also familiar with hardware like dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones,
audio interfaces, mixers, compressors, equalizers, and others.
If a track calls for percussion, that's almost always where I begin. This basic
first-draft percussion track is what I use as the map for the song moving forward.
If recording real instruments is an option, I will typically do so. If a very
specific (or physically impossible) sound is required I use software instruments. I often
use software instruments to compose parts that will be later recorded on real instruments.
For my process, melody and harmony development is an iterative process primarily built on
the preexisting rhythmic framework.
I clip and compress the master bus as little as I think I can get away
with, sometimes not at all. I dislike music that has its transients
squashed too much but I understand that some genres demand loudenating to a high degree.
In general I try to master while I mix so I can get an idea of the final sound as early as
possible.
